Changing landscape of fitness activities in India

Prasita |

In the past five years, the fitness provider landscape in India has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a niche interest to a mainstream obsession. As health consciousness rises and technology advances, the way Indians approach fitness has shifted dramatically, blending tradition with innovation in a delightful mix of sweat and smart gadgets.

ChangingLandscapeOfFitnessActivitiesInIndiaOnce upon a time, fitness was often relegated to the corners of dusty gyms or the occasional jog around the neighbourhood. Fast forward to today, and we find ourselves in an era where digital fitness solutions reign supreme. The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst, propelling many into the arms of online platforms for their workout needs. With gyms shuttered and outdoor activities limited, apps like Cult.fit and HealthifyMe became household names, offering virtual classes and personalised training programs that made it easier than ever to stay fit from the comfort of home. HealthifyMe stands at a strong 40 million user base in India —proof that convenience is king in our fast-paced lives.

While we welcomed digital workouts, smart fitness devices began to enter our lives too. Wearables such as the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6Apple Watch Series 9 and the SAMSUNG Galaxy Smart Watch have become essential companions for those on a health journey. These devices don’t just count steps; they track heart rates, monitor sleep patterns, and even measure blood oxygen levels. With such comprehensive features, it’s no wonder that consumers are increasingly tech-savvy about their health metrics. The wearable tech market in India has seen explosive growth. For the first time this market saw a slight decline in Q2, 2024 despite selling 29.5 million units.

But it’s not just about gadgets and apps; there’s been a significant cultural shift towards holistic wellness. The Fit India Movement, launched in 2019, has encouraged citizens to embrace physical activity as part of their daily lives. This initiative has sparked public enthusiasm for sports and fitness events, fostering a community spirit that celebrates health and well-being. With about  11% of India's population claimed to be grappling with diabetes, there’s an urgent need for comprehensive health strategies that combine exercise with nutritional guidance. People are increasingly recognising that fitness isn’t just about working out; it’s about nourishing the body and mind. Mental wellness is yet another important facet, with only 10-15% of those with mental health conditions seeking out for help.

The demographics driving these trends are equally fascinating. Gyms that once catered predominantly to men now boast nearly equal participation from women—an empowering shift that sees more ladies lifting weights and breaking stereotypes. Group classes like Yoga, Aerobics, Zumba and Pilates have become popular among women seeking both fun and fitness, aided by social media campaigns promoting body positivity and inclusivity.

Urbanisation plays its part too. As cities expand and more people flock to urban centers, awareness of fitness services has skyrocketed. With projections indicating that urban areas will house about 40% of India’s population by 2025, there’s an increasing demand for gyms and fitness centers across Tier II and III cities. This accessibility is crucial as more individuals seek healthier lifestyles amidst busy schedules. Justdial reported a whooping 50% increase in listing of fitness service providers post-COVID.

As we continue to navigate this exciting landscape, it’s clear that the future of fitness in India is bright, filled with opportunities for innovation and community engagement. So whether you’re sweating it out with your favourite online instructor or tracking your progress with the latest smartwatch, remember: we’re all part of this exhilarating journey toward better health—one step (or one app) at a time!
